On a humid, sauna-like evening, approximately 180 fleet footed harriers braved the stifling August heat to run the Bluemont 5K. Following a brief dedication for Stephanie Burke, the restless runners exploded off the starting line eager to test their mettle once again. Valparaiso's native son, Joe Racine, proved why he is a multiple winner of this race, as he built an early lead he would never relinquish. Continuing her assault on her personal records, Plymouth luminary Toni Diegoli was the women's overall winner. The indefatigable Walt Washburn, 82, finished strong alongside his younger peers. All of the finishers put in exceptional efforts under these tough conditions. There were many positive reviews for the written inspiration of some anonymous graffiti artist.
This race also serves as the DCRRC championshp 5K, and the top three runners in ten year age groups received medals or their choice of giveaways.
The race director wishes to express his gratitude to the many selfless volunteers who helped make this race possible. Pat Brown's invaluable work made this race an easy job. Timing help was provided by Liza Recto, Pat Griffith, and Jay Wind. Registration was handled by Janine Comer and Anne-Marie Pastorkovich. The water stop pit crew was manned by Rose McFarland and Sam Morrison. Mr. and Mrs. Racine of Indiana provided refreshing liquids at the finish. Finisher cards were distributed and collated by Jennifer Popovich and Robin Martz. Bob Platt helped with the final race results. Watermelon and sliced oranges were a big hit thanks to Toni Diegoli. The lovely and talented Sharone Cheskis presented awards and gifts. Many others also helped set up before the race and clean up afterwards. Photos were taken by Sam, Robin, Karsten, and others.
