Conducted by DC Road Runners Club

Alex Roe, 21, of Potomac MD, ran 9:22 thru mud and high water to win D.C. Road Runners Club's Juneteenth Tidal Basin 3K at the Jefferson Memorial on Wednesday.

Vicki Hunter, 42, traveled from Nederland, Colorado, to win the women's division in 12:10.

The race commemorated Juneteenth, June 19, 1865, the date when the slaves of Texas were freed by proclamation, the largest single emancipation in history.

Dr. Ronald V. Myers, director of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation, served as official starter. On Thursday, he leads a march from the historic home of Frederick Douglass to the U.S. Capitol, to call for recognition of Juneteenth as a national holiday. Thirteen states already official recognize June 19 as state holidays or sponsor state commemorations.
