160 runners ventured along Canal Road in Washington, DC to take their place at the starting line for the 2003 Bastille Day 4 Miler. Most of them were expecting, along with a fast course, celebration of France and its national holiday; however, there were reminded more of something we American's hold dear - Freedom. To honor those who fought (and are still fighting) in Iraq this year, the Bastille Day 4 Miler had another name for this year: Joe Racine's Freedom Run. Usually, awards are usually bottles of French wine and baguettes, but this year we had California wine, English muffins, and bagels.
As for the running, Richard Rapine crossed the finish line 1st with authority, posting a time of 21:36. He was followed 15 seconds later by Ted Poulos who took the Masters' champion honors. Eric Zander rounded out the top 3 on the men's side. Placing 10th overall, 29 year old Kristin Barry scorched the course with a time of 23:25 to win the women's division. DCRRC President Susan Maher was second for the females, and Hilary Cairns was 3rd. Stephanie Shipp earned the top women's Masters' spot with a time of 28:53 (3rd among the Shipp family, who had 4 members participating).
